The Water of Ae , also Ae for short , is a river in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway , or the traditional county of Dumfriesshire .

course

The river rises in several source streams on the eastern flank of the Queensberry on the southern edge of the Lowther Hills . It initially flows primarily in a southerly direction through a wooded area called the Forest of Ae , which is named after the river. At the level of the village of Ae, the course of the Water of Ae bends to the southeast. Around 2.5 km northwest of Lochmaben there is another turn to the northeast. Around two kilometers downstream, the Water of Ae flows after a total length of around 26 km at Templand into the Kinnel Water , which finally drains over the Annan into the Solway Firth .

The course of the Water of Ae runs through a sparsely populated region of south-west Scotland. The village of Ae, with only a few hundred inhabitants, is the only significant settlement along its banks. Numerous streams flow into the Water of Ae along its course, the largest of which are Deer Burn , Bran Burn , Capel Burn , Windyhill Burn , Goukstane Burn , Black Linn Burn and Garrel Burn . The Water of Ae does not have any significant inflows.

Buildings

Various secondary roads of little importance to the transport infrastructure cross the Water of Ae. Only the crossing of the A701 ( Edinburgh - Dumfries ) is worth mentioning. The Tower House Elshieshields Tower is located on the right bank about two kilometers from its mouth . The structure, which was probably built in the 1560s, probably goes back to a defensive tower built in the 1420s at the same location. The Elshieshields Bridge was built near the Tower House in 1825 to cross the Water of Ae. The single-arched stone arch bridge is a listed building, as is the fortified tower.
