Torthorwald is a village in the Scottish Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . It is located around six kilometers northeast of the center of Dumfries and six kilometers southwest of Lochmaben .
history
The remains of two Stone Age hill forts in the direct vicinity of Torthorwald attest to the settlement of the area going back thousands of years. The ruins of Torthorwald Castle can be found on the southern edge of the village . The origin of the fortress of the Carlyles and Kirkpatricks is unknown. The moth , however, suggests a construction in the 12th century. However, the ruins that have survived to this day date from the 14th century.
The lands of Torthorwald belonged to the Marquesses of Queensberry . He sold it to James Jardine in 1884 . In the 1730s Torthorwald got its own church. Towards the end of the 19th century there was a school for 100 students in the village. The Torthorwald Cruck Cottage, built in the first half of the 19th century , is a monument from the highest Scottish monument category A in Torthorwald.
In 1841, 1,346 people lived in Torthorwald, but the number of inhabitants continued to decline over the course of the century. In the 1961 census, 114 inhabitants were counted in the village. Ten years later there were 167.

With the A709 ( Lockerbie –Dumfries) a national road leads directly through Torthorwald. It connects the village at Dumfries to the A75 and at Lockerbie to the A74 (M) .
