Award

The title was created around 1473 for Chief Justice south of the Forth John Carlyle .

At the death of his great-grandson, the 4th Lord, in June 1575, the title fell to his granddaughter Elizabeth Carlyle, who married Sir James Douglas of Parkhead for the first time. Their son, the 6th Lord, was in debt and in 1622 sold his property in Torthorwald to William Douglas, 1st Earl of Queensberry , and finally gave up his title in 1638, which thus became extinct.
