Torthorwald Castle is the ruin of a Niederungsburg ( Tower House ) in the village of Torthorwald on the outskirts of Dumfries in the Scottish administrative unit Dumfries and Galloway . The first castle on this site was an earthwork moth from the 12th century. The oldest parts of the now dilapidated tower with a rectangular floor plan were built in the 14th century.
history
Torthorwald Castle originally belonged to Sir David Torthorwald in the 13th century . It served as a fortress for the Kirkpatrick and Carlyle families . First it belonged to the Kirkpatricks and then, from 1418, to the Carlyles. In 1544 it was attacked and looted by the troops of Michael Lord Carlyle in the course of his attack on his sister-in-law, Jonet Scrimgeour . Regent Arran reinstated them and the verdict included a list of the castle's contents in Scottish Gaelic and a list of the cattle in Latin . In 1609 the castle fell to the Douglases of Parkhead .
description
The ground floor and knight's hall on the first floor have vaulted ceilings and in the corner there is a straight staircase with a landing to the other upper floors. It appears that the original entrance to the castle was on the first floor.
Torthorwald Castle has been a Scheduled Monument since 1936 .
