The cheese race on May 27, 2013

The The Cooper's Hill Cheese-Rolling and Wake is a four-day entertainment event in Cooper's Hill in Brockworth , Gloucestershire , England . The participants run after a wheel of cheese rolling down a hill.

The tradition supposedly goes back to Roman times . What is certain is that it has been carried out for 200 years. According to the organizers, there is space for a maximum of 5,000 participants on the site. After around 15,000 visitors came in 2009, the 2010 event was canceled due to safety concerns. In 2011 the event could be held again.

The German Euromaxx reporter and presenter Max Merrill from DW-TV -Berlin took part in the cheese race in 2019. He is the son of Robin Merrill .

Head of the ceremony

Each year a loaf of Gloucester cheese is rolled down Cooper's Hill on each of the four rounds. Since the cheese can reach a speed of approx. 70 mph (approx. 110 km / h) and is given a slight lead over the athletes, this goal is hardly attainable. However, the fastest man and the fastest woman are considered the winners.

Due to food rationing, a wooden dummy was used from 1941 to 1954.
