Edurne Pasaban
Edurne Pasaban Lizarribar (born August 1, 1973 , in Tolosa , Guipúzcoa , Spain ) is a Spanish mountaineer. She has climbed all fourteen eight-thousanders and is one of the most successful mountaineers alongside Wanda Rutkiewicz , Oh Eun-Sun , Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner and Nives Meroi .
Ascent of all eight-thousanders
Pasaban is considered the second woman to have climbed all eight-thousanders ; only the South Korean Oh Eun-sun was a few days faster, although an ascent of Oh is controversial. Some sources therefore list Pasaban as the first woman to climb all eight-thousanders. (For details on the controversial ascent, see the dispute over Oh Eun-sun's ascent of Kangchenjunga )
Pasaban climbed the eight-thousanders in the following order:
- May 23, 2001: Mount Everest
- May 16, 2002: Makalu
- October 5, 2002: Cho Oyu
- May 26, 2003: Lhotse
- July 19, 2003: Gasherbrum II
- July 26, 2003: Hidden Peak
- July 26, 2004: K2
- July 20, 2005: Nanga Parbat
- July 12, 2007: Broad Peak
- May 1, 2008: Dhaulagiri
- October 5, 2008: Manaslu
- May 18, 2009: Kangchenjunga
- April 17, 2010: Annapurna
- May 17, 2010: Shishapangma
In two parallel and independent expeditions, Pasaban and Gerlinde Kaltenbrunner reached the summit of Broad Peak on July 12, 2007 at the same time. On Dhaulagiri they were also on the summit on the same day, May 1st, 2008. In October 2008, Pasaban was only one day after Nives Meroi on Manaslu .
She lost two toes at K2 due to frostbite. Additional oxygen was used when descending Mount Everest. In the descent from Kangchenjunga, bottled oxygen was also used in addition between camp 3 and camp 1. In addition, Edurne Pasaban had to be supported by two high porters and four expedition comrades to the base camp. From there she was flown out in a helicopter because of slight frostbite on her toes and fingers.
