Goodbye Yellow Brick Road (English for: "Goodbye, yellow brick road") is the seventh studio album by the British musician Elton John . It was published in 1973 and produced by Gus Dudgeon . With over 30 million copies sold, it is John's best-selling studio album. In 2000, the album was ranked 84th in the UK's Q Magazine list of 100 Greatest British Albums Ever .

background

Was taken Goodbye Yellow Brick Road at the Château d'Hérouville, where John previously Honky Chateau and Do not Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player had taken. Because of the abundance of material, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was released as John's first double album . Originally, the album was supposed to be recorded in Jamaica after The Rolling Stones recorded their Goats Head Soup there. Technical difficulties and political unrest forced the band to leave early with no results. In addition to the successful single releases, other pieces from the album were also often played on the radio, including Harmony , the 11-minute epic Funeral for a Friend / Love Lies Bleeding and his ode to Marilyn Monroe , Candle in the Wind .

The title of the album refers to the yellow brick road that leads to the emerald city in the musical The Wizard of Oz .

reception

What is striking about the album is the high level of detail, creativity and diversity, which critics are ambivalent about: On the one hand, says Stephen Thomas Erlewine from Allmusic, the album contains all the styles that would have made Elton John famous. The diversity of the album is therefore impressive, but at the same time it gives the impression that the overall concept is not particularly cohesive. Stephen Davis of Rolling Stone Magazine also comes to this conclusion . The album is too lush to be able to unfold at all: “ This new record is a big fruity pie that simply doesn't bake.

In his review from 2010, however, Chris Roberts of the BBC comes to the conclusion that over time some works stand out particularly, while many “fillers” leave a poor impression. He does not deny the creative richness of the album, but sees it more as an opportunity for the special pieces to stand out from the crowd: “ Of these 17 songs, banged out in 15 days, helped have become rock canon staples.

The album was voted number 91 of Rolling Stone Magazine's "500 Greatest Albums of All Time" in 2003 .
