The 1974 North American Tour was a tour of North America that British musician and composer Elton John undertook to promote his eighth studio album, Caribou . During the tour he appeared in 43 concerts in the USA and Canada .

tour

In January 1974 Elton John played the album Caribou in the eponymous music recording studio Caribou Ranch . He then went on tour to Japan and Australia. In the summer of 1974 he already recorded his next album, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy, as well as the singles Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds and Philadelphia Freedom . He was partly supported by John Lennon , who specially traveled to Colorado to the Caribou Ranch.

With a bet, Elton John managed to win John Lennon for a concert during the tour. The joint appearance at Madison Square Garden in New York on November 28, 1974 turned out to be the highlight of the tour in retrospect. At the same time it was the last concert appearance of John Lennon. One of the songs he sang with him - I Saw Her Standing There - was released by John as the B-side of Philadelphia Freedom in 1975 . Half of his 1976 live album Here and There consisted of recordings from that evening.

“The moment when Lennon's black-suited figure appeared will never be forgotten by anyone who saw it. The whole Madison Square Garden audience, 18,000 people, rose to their feet as one, with a roar far and away above the routine adulation of pop… 'I'd heard of applause literally making a place shake, but I'd never seen it before, 'David Croker says. 'That night, though, it was true, You could feel the floorboards quivering under your feet.' ”

“The moment Lennon's black-clad character appeared will never be forgotten by those who were there. All of the visitors to Madison Square Gardens, 18,000 people, got up at the same time with a roar, much louder than the routine flattery of pop ... 'I've heard of applause that literally shakes a place, but I've never seen it,' says David Croker. 'That night, however, it came true, you could feel the trembling of the ground beneath your feet.' "

The 1974 North American Tour was John's biggest tour to date in North America. Around 25,000 kilometers had to be traveled to be able to organize a concert every 1.5 days on average. The private jet used for this was nicknamed "The Starship" and across the fuselage the illuminated lettering "Elton John Band Tour 1974". Because of its enormous popularity, tickets were still in short supply and those who managed to get hold of them had to put up with long-term overnight stays in front of the ticket sales points.

John also used the tour to release his second Greatest Hits album, which resulted in three of his albums simultaneously appearing in the US charts in late 1974 (the third being Goodbye Yellow Brick Road ).
