In January 1976, the Concorde supersonic passenger aircraft began regular service. However, the US Secretary of Transportation had been asked by citizens not to give the Concorde any landing rights in the USA. One of the reasons mentioned was that the Concorde was too loud.
The name of the tour Louder Than Concorde… but not quite as pretty came from a joke by Princess Margaret . John was on a concert tour in the UK when he was booked for a private performance on royal orders. After his performance, the princess mentioned to him "This tour of yours sounds as if it'll be louder than Concorde" (it sounds like your tour is louder than the Concorde). In keeping with John's humor, he adopted the phrase and was still allowed to perform in the USA.
