Robert Chandran

Robert Viswanathan Chandran (born May 31, 1950 in Mumbai , India , † January 7, 2008 in Riau , Indonesia ) was an Indian-born American entrepreneur and the founder and CEO of Chemoil .

Chandran unsuccessfully studied medicine at the University of Madras and later earned a master's degree in chemistry . After the death of his mother, he left India in 1972 and lived in the Philippines, where he studied at the Asian Institute of Management and then emigrated to the USA . Chandran made his first fortune in California by investing in real estate. In 1981 he received his citizenship as an American and in the same year founded Chemoil, an oil and chemical company specializing in the refueling of ships.

As early as 1991, Forbes Magazine listed Chemoil as one of the largest private US companies. However, due to the Exxon Valdez disaster and the subsequent downturn, Chemoil had to be restructured. Chemoil formed a partnership with the Japanese trading house Itochu and bought 50 percent of the company's shares. In 2005, Chandran relocated Chemoil's headquarters to Singapore. He gave up his US citizenship and received citizenship from Singapore .

Chandran died in January 2008 of injuries sustained in a helicopter crash. His private fortune last amounted to $ 450 million.
