Camilo Mori
Camilo Mori Serrano (born September 24, 1896 in Valparaíso , † December 7, 1973 in Santiago de Chile ) was a Chilean painter .
From 1914 he studied at the Escuela de Bellas Artes in Santiago with Juan Francisco González , Ricardo Richon Brunet , Alberto Valenzuela Llanos and Agustín Undurraga . As a student of Fernando Álvarez de Sotomayor , he belonged to the painters group of the Generacion del Trece .
On a study trip to Europe, he met the painter Juan Gris in Paris in 1920 and became familiar with the work of Paul Cézanne . In 1923 he was one of the first members of the avant-garde Grupo Montparnasse , alongside Luis Vargas Rosas , José Perotti , Henriette Petit and Julio Ortiz de Zárate in Santiago de Chile . In 1929 he traveled to Paris again with a group of young painters and sculptors who included Julio Ortiz de Zárate, Isaías Cabezón , Inés Puyó , Augusto Eguiluz , Julio Antonio Vásquez and Laura Rodig and who became known under the name of Generacion de Veintiochi . On this trip he met Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque , among others .
From 1928 to 1929 Mori was director of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , from 1933 he was a professor at the Escuela de Arquitectura of the Universidad de Chile . From 1937 to 1939 he lived in the USA, where he designed the Chilean pavilion at the 1939 New York World's Fair . From 1951 to 1954 he was President of the Asociación de Pintores y Escultores de Chile .
Mori has received numerous awards for his works, including the Premio Nacional de Arte in 1950 . Both during his lifetime and after his death, there were solo exhibitions of his works, most recently a retrospective at the Instituto Cultural de las Condes in Santiago in 1988 and a Homenaje a Camilo Mori Serrano in Viña del Mar in 2001 . Mori's paintings are in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes , the Museo Municipal de Bellas Artes de Valparaíso and the Pinacoteca of the Universidad de Valparaíso .
