Ryoo Seung-wan (born December 15, 1973 in Asan , South Korea ) is a South Korean director , screenwriter , producer and actor . He is known for his films The Berlin File (2013) and Veteran - Above the Law (2015). As an actor, Ryoo u. a. in Oasis , Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance , Lady Vengeance and City of Violence . He is the older brother of actor Ryoo Seung-beom , who often appears in his films. His wife is the film producer Kang Hye-jeong. Both are founders of the production company Filmmaker R&K and often work together. The couple have three children together.
He began his directorial career with the episode film Die Bad , which attracted a lot of attention. Numerous action films followed. 2002 Film Noir No Blood No Tears , which is about two women who steal a lot of money from gangsters. The fantasy film Arahan (2004) was relatively successful with 2 million viewers in South Korea. This was followed by the boxer film Crying Fist (2005) and City of Violence .
In the crime drama The Unjust , Ryoo takes a look at the social classes of South Korea and corruption. Critically praised, the film reached 2.8 million viewers. This was followed by the North Korean thriller The Berlin File about a North Korean agent couple in Berlin . Ryoo wanted to create a film that was reminiscent of The Bourne Identity . The film reached over 7 million viewers in South Korea. This was followed by his biggest success to date: Veteran - Above the Law reached over 13 million viewers in 2015. In the film, an experienced police officer, played by Hwang Jung-min , follows the insidious machinations of a wealthy company heir.
His next projects are the sequels The Berlin File 2 and Veteran 2 . For the first film, the script was revised several times due to the changes in North Korea .
