The Nippon Budōkan ( Japanese 日本 武 道 館 ), often short Budōkan , is the name of a martial arts hall in the Chiyoda district of the Japanese capital Tokyo . The name Nippon Budōkan Hall , which is sometimes used in the English-speaking world, is a pleonasm , since the Japanese syllable -kan already means "hall". Budō ( Japanese 武 道 , German: "Military route, war route") is the generic term for all Japanese martial arts .
description
The Budōkan was originally built to host the judo competitions at the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. It consists of three octagonal halls, the largest of which is modeled on a hall of the Hōryū-ji temple in Nara and can hold around 14,000 visitors.
Budōkan is located in Kitanomaru Park in central Tokyo, just a two-minute walk from the Kudanshita Subway Station, near the Yasukuni Shrine .
The Budōkan became known worldwide through the live albums by Bob Dylan ( At Budokan ) and by the US band Cheap Trick with the same title. Both were released in 1978. The Beatles also performed there in 1966; the concert took place under strong security measures, as protests and death threats by conservative Japanese had come. It also served as the namesake for Sony's Walkman WM-DD100 . According to Sony, the selectable DOL (Dynamic Optimum Loudness) bass function is said to have been modeled on the acoustics of this hall.
use
In the Budōkan there are regular competitions in various martial arts, so once a year the national Japanese competitions in Jūdō , Kendō , Karate , Shorinji-Kempo , Kyūdō , Naginata and similar sports. However, classes in various martial arts are practically held there all the time and visitors can watch the training. Large wrestling competitions are also held there.
The Budōkan is also very popular as a venue for concerts, for example:
Each year on August 15, a national ceremony to commemorate the dead of World War II takes place in the Budōkan , in which the Japanese Prime Minister as well as the Tennō and his wife take part.
