watch TV

Operation Valkyrie

His involvement in the filming of the assassination attempt on July 20, 1944 generated a lot of media coverage. As one of the grandsons of Count von Stauffenberg, his participation in the film was controversial in the family as well as in the press and public. Among other things, his uncle Berthold, Stauffenberg's eldest son, had expressed himself very critical of the film in the early planning phase, because he feared a "Hollywood-like" portrayal, especially because of the cast of the main role with Tom Cruise .

It was sometimes claimed that von Schulthess only got the role of Fabian von Schlabrendorff , Henning von Tresckow's adjutant , in order to give the film a kind of “general absolution” through the participation of a von Stauffenberg's relative. Von Schulthess admitted that he initially had concerns about this. During the shooting, however, von Schulthess said that due to the professionalism with which Cruise went to the film, any criticism of his person and the film was unjustified.

The media presence of the film even before the cinema release on January 22, 2009, the participation of the Stauffenberg grandson was beneficial in any case: In this context, von Schulthess was a sought-after interview partner in television and the press. Among other things, he was a guest of Beckmann and gave interviews in the Welt am Sonntag , the Stuttgarter Nachrichten and the Berliner Zeitung .
