The Reformed Church of Bruggen in today's city of St. Gallen was built between 1903 and 1906 in the then still independent community of Straubenzell . It was also the first Reformed church in the Evangelical Reformed parish of Straubenzell, which was founded in 1902. The church consists of a cross-shaped central building to which a tower with a pointed roof was added to the side.

history

With the founding of the Evangelical Reformed parish of Straubenzell, the desire for an own place of worship also arose. Therefore it was decided in 1903 to advertise a competition for a church. In this case, the choice of the architectural style was free, only the tower should harmonize with the neighboring Catholic church with its onion dome. Other requirements were 700 seats, of which 30 to 40 on a minimum of 30 square meters organ empore and unobstructed view from all seats on baptismal font and pulpit are kept free, just had a room area of 30 to 40 square meters for the sacrament and confirmation celebrations. The tower had to be able to record the clock and bells. A total of 76 projects were submitted. No 1st place was awarded. The second place went to a project by Bösiger & Daxelhofer from Biel and Streiff & Schindler from Zurich. Because third place went to Curjel & Moser, and E. Herman's project received an honorary report. In June 1903 it was decided that the project should be built by Curjel & Moser. Construction began as early as October 1903. The building site was on a prominent place, on an elevated position, a terrace was also built north of the church. The church was consecrated on January 14, 1906. In 1966, a comprehensive interior renovation was carried out according to the plans of the architect Max Künzler.

Building

The outer facade is in the style of the German Renaissance. The shape of the tower is reminiscent of the Appenzell miners' churches.

In the interior design, a choir was dispensed with, which was a close connection between the altar, pulpit, pulpit back wall and organ. During the renovation, the interior was radically redesigned. A wooden ceiling was put in here, which now covers the star vault. The main room was also made smaller by adding a sacristy in the southern arm of the cross and separating a hall on the upper floor.
