Donato Cabrera

Donato Cabrera (born February 4, 1973 in Pasadena (California) , USA) is an American conductor . The Vienna Philharmonic's Karajan Conducting Fellow made his European debut at the Munich Chamber Opera in 1998 . Currently (2008) Cabrera is the deputy conductor of the San Francisco Opera .

Donato Cabrera, a Vienna Philharmonic's Karajan Conducting Fellow, is in the avant-garde among America's young conductors. Since his European debut with the Zwei Groschen Kammer Oper Munich in 1998, which was greeted with critical acclaim, he has pursued a diverse career. Currently, Mr. Cabrera is the Assistant Conductor of the San Francisco Opera.

Since beginning his collaboration with the San Francisco Opera in 2005, Mr. Cabrera has performed the world premiere of John Adam's opera Doctor Atomic, as well as other productions such as La forza del destino, Die Zauberflöte, Fidelio, Madama Butterfly, Manon Lescaut and Tristan and Isolde jointly responsible. He made his conducting debut at the San Francisco Opera in October 2006 with Die Fledermaus. Most recently, he also conducted Don Giovanni there, a production that was greeted with enthusiastic applause. Due to his unprecedented success, the opera's music director, Mr Donald Runnicles, has offered Mr Cabrera a third season as assistant conductor. In December 2005, Mr. Cabrera made his Portland Opera debut with Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, where he received unanimous praise and acclaim for the quality of the ensemble and orchestra.

Mr. Cabrera's devotion to new music deepened as Music Director of the American Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME). With ACME he has supported and performed numerous works by young composers as well as contemporary masterpieces. For this ensemble he has conducted works by John Adams, Jacob Druckman, Donald Martino, Frederic Rzewski and Elliott Carter.

Mr. Cabrera is also dedicated to music education and cultural support. For more than four seasons he conducted concerts for young people for the New Jersey Symphony Orchestra and designed its programs. He made music for over 15,000 children in New Jersey every year. Mr. Cabrera has also often directed the Greater Newark Youth Orchestra, an organization dedicated to creating an enriching and fruitful atmosphere for urban young people in and around the city of Newark. He has also conducted youth orchestras in Cincinnati, Norwalk and Ridgfield, both in Connecticut, as well as the youth orchestra of the famous Juilliard School in New York. Mr. Cabrera is also devoted to young singers and often works with young artists from the Portland Opera and the San Francisco Opera.

Mr. Cabrera was also deputy conductor for many famous festivals, such as the Salzburg Festival, Ravinia, Spoleto and the Aspen Music Festival . For two summers he was the conductor of the Music Academy of the West . Through his work he came together with numerous music greats, such as James Conlon , Mariss Jansons , Neeme Järvi , Nicola Luisotti , Zdeněk Mácal , Kurt Masur , Julius Rudel , Donald Runnicles and Stanislaw Skrowaczewski.

At the age of just 24, Donato Cabrera made his debut with the Reno Chamber Orchestra. He received his degree from the University of Illinois. In addition, he attended courses at Indiana University in Bloomington and at the Manhattan School of Music in New York.
