Lothar Zirngiebl

Lothar Zirngiebl (born October 5, 1902 in Freising ; † July 8, 1973 in Hildesheim ) was a German entomologist and headmaster.

Life

Lothar Zirngiebl attended secondary school in Munich , Speyer and Ludwigshafen am Rhein , but he was unable to take up the planned medical studies due to serious health problems from service in the First World War . He owed his interest in entomology to his father, the professor and senior teacher Dr. Hermann Zirngiebl. He worked for some time at the Bavarian Station for Plant Protection and Plant Diseases in Weihenstephan , and until his death in 1946 he dealt with the diseases of cultivated plants and the research of the beetle and sawfly fauna .

After attending the teacher training institute (1922–1923), Lothar Zirngiebl became a teacher in Leistadt , now part of Bad Dürkheim . In his free time he devoted himself intensively to entomological studies, went on countless excursions and meticulously recorded his nature observations. He specialized in the sawfly and published numerous writings that dealt with the way of life, the morphology and the distribution of this group of animals. Due to his scientific publications, he passed the Abitur in 1936. From 1942 to 1946 he took part in the Second World War as a medical sergeant and laboratory assistant . From 1949 he resumed his teaching profession, this time as the main teacher and headmaster of the young community of Birkenheide . In 1962 he had to take early retirement due to health problems and moved to Himmelsthür near Hildesheim , the hometown of his wife, where he died in 1973. His collection including the majority of the primary types is in the Zoological State Collection in Munich ; Further types of newly described taxa are at the Natural History Museum in Vienna, the State Museum of Natural History in Stuttgart, the Westphalian Museum of Natural History in Münster, the Natural History Museum in Helsinki and the Musée Cantonal de Zoologie in Lausanne.

meaning

Zirngiebl made a special contribution to researching the hymenoptera fauna of the Palatinate , even if his plan for a "Rhenish Hymenoptera catalog" failed due to the consequences of the Second World War. In the field of plant wasps, which he also studied through numerous breeding experiments, he gained an international reputation. Working in the zoological collections in Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Bremen and Vienna made him a sought-after expert, to whom insects were sent from many parts of the world for identification. He also became known for his vivid and often amusing descriptions that dealt with the insect life of his homeland. The published work comprises 84 publications. Zirngiebl described six new genera and subgenera and 66 new species and varieties, of which today only ten are recognized as valid names for genera (1), subgenera (1) or species (8).
