societies
In 1892, at the age of 14, Hesselink founded the Vitesse association in his hometown Arnhem with his two years older brother Jan and a few friends . In addition to soccer, Hesselink also practiced cricket , athletics and tug of war - and had some successes: he set a Dutch national record over the mile; his Dutch long jump record of 6.20 meters, set in 1898, lasted for twelve years; in the tug of war he and his team became Dutch champions. As a soccer player, he was usually found in the center forward position , but also played in midfield or in defense . He studied chemistry in Leiden ; During this time he was active from 1899 to 1901 at HVV Den Haag , with whom he became Dutch champions in 1900 and 1901 . He also played several times in the Bondselftal , the unofficial predecessor of the national team.
Because of his studies, he moved to Munich in 1902 , where he joined the FC Bayern club, which was founded two years ago . He was the first foreign and also outstanding player of the club; has been described as a "feared goalscorer and brilliant playmaker". Ahead of the other players in terms of quality, he was asked to act as coach, which he did from 1902 to 1905.
When the first president of the club, Franz John , left the club, he also took over the office, which he held from 1903 to 1905. In addition, Hesselink still had time to complete his chemistry studies and philosophy studies with a doctorate.
National team
Scarcely had he returned to his homeland, he was a member of the national team that on May 14, 1905 in front of 30,000 spectators in Rotterdam - in their second international match ever - against the selection of Belgium with goals from Bok de Korver (76th), Eddy de Neve ( 76 .; by penalty), Guus Lutjens (80th) and Dolf Kessler (84th) won 4-0.
It was his only international match, even though he played actively for Vitesse for ten years and was champion of the Oost division in 1913, 1914 and 1915 and twice, in 1914 and 1915, Dutch runner-up. During this time he was also treasurer and trainer, from 1917 to 1922 president of the club he co-founded.
Others
