Edward "Eddie" Louis Kotal (born September 1, 1902 in Chicago , Illinois , † January 27, 1973 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American American football player . He played in the National Football League (NFL) with the Green Bay Packers . Kotal was the first full-time scout in the NFL.
Player career
Eddie Kotal studied at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and Lawrence University and played American football there . Kotal was hired by the Green Bay Packers in 1925, who were trained by Curly Lambeau . In 1927 the Packers were able to tie LaVern Dilweg to the team and in 1929 Lambeau succeeded in significantly strengthening his offense by hiring John McNally . In the same year Kotal won the NFL championship with his team . Kotal was able to contribute three touchdowns to win the title. After this season Eddie Kotal ended his playing career.
Trainer career / scout
Eddie Kotal was after his playing career in 1930 head coach of the football team at Lawrence University and was then coach at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point . He trained there among other things football and basketball teams. After his coaching career, he worked as a scout and assistant coach for the Green Bay Packers from 1942 . In 1945 he moved to the Cleveland / Los Angeles Rams . In contrast to the previous scouts in the NFL, he operated this activity at the Rams as a full-time job and not just part-time and was out and about throughout the country to observe young talent. Kotal was the discoverer of numerous well-known players, such as Dick Lane , Norm Van Brocklin and Elroy Hirsch . Edward Kotal found his final resting place in the Forest Lawn Memorial Park (Hollywood Hills) in Los Angeles .
Honors
Eddie Kotal was voted an All Pro once and is a member of the University of Wisconson-Stevens Point Athletic Hall of Fame . The Eddie Kotal Memorial Award is given annually to a student in need to enable them to study.
