During her career, Karboul has held senior positions at a number of global companies. She was project manager for innovation management and supplier relations for Mercedes-Benz in South Africa and Germany, where she worked from 1996 to January 2000. In addition to her work with Mercedes-Benz, she was also a manager for knowledge transfer and leadership development at DaimlerCrysler University in the USA, Singapore and Germany until 2001.

In 2001 Karboul became a strategic consultant for the Boston Consulting Group in Germany. In an interview she said: “At first I was drawn to advice - and to BCG in particular - because of the variety of tasks and the opportunity to learn. I felt that the advice would help me broaden my professional horizons by gaining insights into different industrial sectors and being confronted with different skills and approaches. "

From 2002 to 2007 Karboul was a senior consultant and was later promoted to managing partner of the Neuwaldegg consulting company in Vienna. Your first tasks in the company were of a technological and sociological nature, as well as system changes through organizational and leadership development.

In 2007 Karboul founded the international leadership and change consulting firm Change, Leadership and Partners. According to the website, the consulting firm is dedicated to executives and organizations worldwide in building a more desirable and sustainable future. The company has offices in Tunis, Cologne and London.

Karboul was honored in 2012 for her corporate coaching at the ESMT / KDVI Coaching Colloquium in Berlin, where she received the “2012 Best Coaching Colloquium Case Award”. Konstantin Korotov and Andreas Bernhard from ESMT cited Karboul's research and its learning and development influence on the coaching community as reasons why she was selected for the award. "I can tell you that opening up and looking in the mirror is an important step for a top team that prefers to deny its own defects and thereby jeopardize a billion-dollar investment," said Karboul of her case. “It wasn't about 'feeling better', but about creating a high-performing top team that can lead the company in times of crisis. It was about overcoming egos and creating a space for different perspectives and truths. Together with the team we have reached a turning point. "

Karboul's coaching of executives has also received recognition in various German magazines, such as B. Brand Eins, a celebrated business magazine that has a circulation of over 100,000 copies each month and has published articles about it several times. Other German publications about Karboul include the Handelsblatt, a business daily and the daily Die Welt.

Karboul has also taught at numerous schools and universities, such as the ZFU Business School and the Frankfurt University of Applied Sciences.

Minister for Tourism

In January 2014 Karboul was appointed Minister of Tourism in Tunisia. She was the first woman in Tunisian history to hold this post and served as the youngest cabinet member under Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa from January 2014 to February 2015.

During her speech at the 2014 TEDx Carthage event, Karboul reported on the invitation to join the new Tunisian government. “I got a phone call three months ago that changed my life,” Karboul said. “Our Prime Minister Mehdi Jomaa called me and said: 'Tunisia needs us. Come home. Come back to rebuild our nation. Come back to be part of a start-up democracy team. '"

During a session of Tunisia's constituent assembly, a controversy over Karboul was sparked, which should give the newly elected government a vote of confidence. The incident began when members of the congregation commented on rumors that she had once visited Israel. Mehdi Jomaa defended his minister by stating that Karboul never completed the said trip after being questioned at an airport for several hours, allegedly because she was of Arab origin and a Muslim. The new government ultimately won the assembly's vote of confidence.

The new government of Mehdi Jomaa was sworn in on January 29, 2014. Karboul submitted her resignation as Minister of Tourism just hours later. "It is the prime minister's decision whether or not to accept my decision," she said.

Karboul has expressed her commitment to serve Tunisia knowing that, despite some difficulties, the country still offers opportunities for change. Jomaa refused to resign and confirmed his continued confidence in his minister.

Karboul's role as Minister of Tourism has been to polish it up, which represents 8-12% of Tunisia's GDP and is of vital importance for 20% of the population. It also helped ensure transparent elections and worked to implement more effective economic and social government policies.

During her tenure, Karboul generated "national hype" for her social media activities. She has won international awards for using these platforms, with which she promoted the empowerment of young people in the digital world.

After the government

In 2016 Karboul became Secretary General of the Maghreb Economic Forum, an independent and impartial non-profit company that aims to create a more inclusive and sustainable economy in the Maghreb region by helping leaders face challenges such as social growth, gender equality and economic reforms to tackle with a more innovative approach. On her website Karboul explains that it is her duty “to give Tunisian research and development, the implementation of democratic, social and economic reforms and strategies a face, as well as to network the institutions with other bodies, to initiate collaborations and to give supporters win in order to promote progress and development for Tunisian society and the entire region. "

In an interview with the Boston Consulting Group, she shared her vision for Tunisia's youth. "Given our individual and collective strengths, we believe we need to work to restructure our region," said Karboul. “Our young people deserve a better future. I dream of a time when the people of this region will enjoy a decent education, where there will be plenty of jobs, health and a good quality of life, and where Tunisia in particular will be a leading light for other Arab nations. "

In September 2016, Karboul was named as one of 20 global leaders to lead the International Commission on Funding Global Education Opportunities. The commission, which includes five former presidents and prime ministers, plus three Nobel Prize winners, was created to reverse the global lack of funding for education. “Our mission,” said Karboul, “was to drive breakthrough solutions to end the global education crisis. What we found was clear: inclusive education - education that every child achieves, especially those who are most at risk of not getting an education such as poor and discriminated children, girls, and those facing multiple disadvantages - is essential Means that can combat economic stagnation, political instability, conflict, migration, gender inequality, corruption, preventable diseases and dissatisfaction based on inequality. "

Karboul stated in a separate interview that she believes educational reform is crucial as new generations fall further behind the educational curve. "Up until now, education has been viewed as an absolutely national issue - without ever actually making it onto the global agenda," said Karboul. “We have before us how we can get 124 million children and young people into school for the first time, and what and how we should teach the other 250 million who are already in school but who are not learning enough. If we fail to act today, we will lose many future generations. "

Personal

Karboul's father, Mohamed Karboul, was State Secretary in the Baccouche government and Tunisia's ambassador to Germany. She was married to the German engineer Marcus Gottschalk from 2002 to 2016. She has two daughters, Shedlia and Leyla.

Karboul is fluent in Arabic, French, English and German, and has knowledge of Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese and Greek.

Lectures and publications

Karboul has lectured and appeared in many publications, often to promote advances in corporate governance and education. She advocates innovation as a means of overcoming issues such as employment, political instability and economic reform.

At the 2015 TEDx Berlin Event entitled “How leaders thrive in a complex world”, Karboul discussed some of her ideas from her recently published book Coffin Corner . “It only takes one app to make an entire industry petty,” she said, explaining that executives who rely too much on planning and control are struggling to survive in an ever-changing market.

At a 2016 conference in London to support Syria and the region, Karboul, as a key note speaker, described what is the key to reversing many of the problems plaguing the region. “There is a magic key with which the space of possibility can be opened, the space of security, and the space of long-lasting stability - and this key is called education. Sticking to the traditional way of building schools and hiring teachers is not fast and not effective enough. Nowadays, through technology, we can bring education and even school to the children - if we can't bring the children to school. "
