Birger Sellin

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Birger Sellin (born February 1, 1973 in Berlin ) became known as the German author of book publications, which he is said to have written independently despite his disability as an autistic person .

Live and act

Sellin has shown signs of autism in his behavior since he was two years old - presumably due to post-encephalitic retardation - which severely impair him. Since August 1990, however, his parents have seen “ supported communication ” as a way of communicating with their son in writing. The journalist Michael Klonovsky became aware of the case in 1992 and wrote an article about Birger Sellin in the Hamburger Zeit magazine on July 31, 1992.

Sellin finally achieved greater fame through the 1993 book I don't want to be Inmich anymore , published by Klonovsky , which Sellin is said to have written independently with the help of supported communication. With over 80,000 copies sold and translations in seven languages, the book was very successful - but it also led to fierce controversies about supported communication and, as a result, to doubts about the credibility of Sellin's authorship. These controversies were not alleviated by two television programs with and about Birger Sellin.

Felix Kuballa shot the documentary for WDR about Birger Sellin like a lump of earth growing on the soul . In 1995, the film and Kuballa received the special award from the Minister of Culture of North Rhine-Westphalia at the Adolf Grimme Prize . And on August 30, 1995 Sellin had an appearance on the Stern-TV show with Günther Jauch , during which he was interviewed live by Jauch, supported by his mother .

After its books by 1993 and 1995 texts were by Birger Sellin in a song on an album of the band Pur , (1998) in a chamber opera (2000) and in an experimental radio - radio play used (2005).

On July 24, 2013, Stern-TV broadcast a feature about the now 40-year-old Birger Sellin with the title An autistic seeks contact with the outside world .
