Nathacha Appanah

Nathacha Appanah-Mouriquand (born May 24, 1973 in Mahébourg ) is a Mauritian writer and journalist.

biography

Nathacha Appanah's ancestors came to Mauritius as contract workers in the 19th century. She grew up in the north of the island. In her home country she worked as a journalist for Le Mauricien and Week-End Scope before moving to France in 1998. There she wrote her first novel Les Rochers de Poudre d'or , about the history of Indian contract workers in Mauritius. The second novel, Blue Bay Palace , dealt with the problems of the Hindu community in Mauritius, their traditional caste system and the influence of modern mass tourism.
