Mark Petering

Mark D. Petering (* 1973 in Milwaukee / Wisconsin ) is an American composer and music teacher.

Petering attended Luther College and studied at Bowling Green State University and the University of Minnesota . His teachers included Samuel Adler , Burton Beerman , Wallace Depue , John W. Downey , Marilyn Shrude, and Judith Lang Zaimont . His dissertation was a bayan concert for the Moldovan accordionist Stas Venglevski . At the Aspen Music Festival he took lessons from George Tsontakis . Since 2005 he has been the director of music theory, composition and music technology at Carthage College .

Petering's compositions, which, apart from the USA, became known mainly in Eastern Europe and Turkey, were among others. a. Performed by the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra , the Milwaukee Chamber Orchestra , the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Seattle Philharmonic Orchestra . In 2003 he received the Swan Composer Prize for The Swimming Pool . In the same year he won the Music Festival of the Hamptons Composition Contest with the orchestral piece Train & Tower , which was performed in July of that year on the festival grounds in Bridgehampton under the direction of conductor Lukas Foss and with the participation of a train on the Long Island Rail Road . He has received other awards from ASCAP , the National Federation of Music Clubs, and the National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts .
