Lisa Ann Brokop (born June 6, 1973 in Surrey , British Columbia ) is a Canadian country singer and songwriter .

Career

Lisa Brokop started making music at a young age. As a 12-year-old girl, she won her first youth competitions and performed at festivals and jamborees . Brokop's powerful, mature voice for its age finally caught the eye of country musician Tommy Hunter , who had it on his show in 1989. Their first single, Daddy Sing to Me , was released the following year , which is also included on their 1991 debut album, My Love . This work was released on a small indie label. A year later, the participation in the musical comedy Harmony Cats also brought some attention. Here Brokop was seen at the side of Hoyt Axton and Kim Coates . This excursion into the film world should remain an exception.

Brokop only took on a larger record company in 1994 with the album Every Little Girl's Dream . Patriot, a sister label of Liberty , also opened the singer to the US market. The singles Give Me a Ring Sometime and Take That were their first minor hit in the Billboard country charts in 1994 , each at number 52. By 1999 Brokop had a total of nine hits, but no single made it into the top 40.

Every Little Girl's Dream , however, was Brokop's greatest album success in Canada, for which she received her only gold award for over 50,000 units sold. Two years later, Brokop was now under contract with Capitol , the singer's next album, simply titled Lisa Brokop , was released. In the US, the singles She Can't Save Him and Before He Kissed Me reached the bottom of the charts. A year later, Brokop received Canada's most important country award, the Canadian Country Music Award (CCMA), for the first time. She was named Duo of the Year with Duane Steele . She had been nominated numerous times since 1991, including 1991 as Newcomer of the Year, Best Singer, and Best Single and Best Album of the year.

From 1998, after another label change, from Capitol to Columbia , Brokop was more involved in the songwriting of her songs. Three singles hit the country charts, but because they did not reach high ratings, Columbia decided not to release When You Get to Be You in the United States. In Canada the work was more successful and with Better Off Broken Brokop reached the top 10 of the country singles charts for the first time.

The label changes continued in the following years, but Brokop released new albums again and again, mostly on indie labels. The American mainstream market in Nashville had finally given up the singer by then. Between 2001 and 2003 Brokop was named “Independent Female Artist of the Year” at the CCMAs for three years in a row. Canadian country hits like Something Undeniable (2000) or Break It (2008), both Top 20, rounded off the decade.

In 2011 Brokop and her husband Paul Jefferson formed the duo The Jeffersons, which released an album of the same name. As a soloist, she hit the Canadian country charts again in 2013 and 2014 with the singles Let It Burn and Love Me If You Can .

Brokop's most recent album The Patsy Cline Project was released in 2017, which she also presented live. In addition to this tribute to country legend Patsy Cline , she also announced the Legendary Ladies of Country tour in 2018 , during which she will sing songs by artists who have had a lasting influence on her: Loretta Lynn , Tammy Wynette , Tanya Tucker and Emmylou Harris .
