Armen Avanessian (2016)

Armen Avanessian (born June 19, 1973 in Vienna ) is an Austrian philosopher , literary scholar and political theorist . He became known to a wider public through his work on speculative realism and accelerationism in art and philosophy .

Life

Armen Avanessian studied philosophy and political science with Jacques Rancière in Paris. He was in Bielefeld with Karl Heinz Bohrer with the dissertation Phenomenology of the ironic spirit. PhD in ethics, poetics and politics of modernity . Avanessian worked for several years as a freelance journalist, editor ( Le Philosophoire , Paris) and in publishing in London .

From 2007 to 2014 Avanessian taught at the Peter Szondi Institute for General and Comparative Literature at the Free University in Berlin. In 2011 he was a visiting fellow at the German Department at Columbia University and in 2012 at the German Department at Yale University . Since 2013 he has been a guest lecturer at various art academies (Nuremberg, Vienna, Basel, Copenhagen, California). In 2011, Armen Avanessian founded the bilingual research and publication platform Speculative Poetics , which unites philosophers, writers and artists from all over the world in the service of a scientific discipline that is yet to be established. Since 2017 he has headed the Armen Avanessian & Enemies event series in the Red Salon of the Berliner Volksbühne , which is supported by the Nemetschek Foundation. Guests included Dirk Baecker , Evgeny Morozov , Leif Randt , Quentin Meillassoux , Ray Brassier , Robert Misik and Britta Thie .

Armen Avanessian is in a relationship with the art historian Marie-France Rafael, with whom he has a son.

After his dissertation, which already dealt with phenomena at the interface of art, politics and philosophy, Avanessian concentrated on the development of a new research approach in literary theory and linguistic philosophy. Together with professional colleagues such as Anke Hennig , he began working more intensively from 2011 onwards to combine new speculative- ontological approaches with the language-philosophical theories of the 20th century, primarily in the jointly written monographs of the present tense. Poetics of a Tempus (Diaphanes, Berlin 2012) and Metanoia. Speculative ontology of language (Merve, Berlin 2014). He also transported accelerationism as a direction of political philosophy in the German-speaking area. For efforts to promote his post-capitalist ideas and publications, Avanessian was named one of the most important thought leaders of the year by Wired magazine in 2015 .

He produced the 2016 film Hyperstition with Berlin director Christopher Roth , which questions the concept of " time " with the help of ontology, science fiction and sociological topics . The film is composed of conversations with well-known philosophers and those of a younger generation and has been shown at various art festivals in Europe and the USA.

Meanwhile, his non-academic work has to be seen as a central part of Avanessian's work. This applies to much discussed journalistic references to current political topics such as the refugee issue, a large number of lectures in German-speaking, but also international art and culture, as well as a large number of interviews and intellectual portraits. Beyond the classic academic mainstream, Avanessian also succeeds time and again in smuggling new terms and theoretical constellations into the public discourse, some of which are neologisms , some of which were previously familiar in smaller circles, which Avanessian, as the publisher, to a certain extent renewed Wise produced and prepared for the German context. Examples of this are “speculative realism”, “acceleration”, “xenofeminism”, “hyperstition” or, most recently, the concept of the “time complex: postcontemporary”. Hyperstition is not just another term, but also describes a method: the realization of ideas or fictions directed from the future into the present.

Many of Avanessian's books have been translated into multiple languages, including English, Russian, Dutch, Spanish, and French.

literature

Armen Avanessian initially published mainly academic monographs and essays on linguistics , semantics and literary studies . His philosophical breakthrough came with the anthologies on speculative realism ( Realismus Jetzt ) and with the accelerationism reader #Akzeleration . With the move to Merve Verlag, Avanessian concentrates on the publication of current and not yet established philosophy, with an increasing focus on feminist, financial theory and technological issues. He also publishes his own books, which revolve around the possibility of poeticizing philosophy.

With his monograph heading. Ethics of Knowledge - Poetics of Existence , he then deals in an explicitly accelerationist way with the grievances of the actually existing university. Instead of a mere critical discussion, Avanessian is also constantly building on alternative platforms, such as the summer school organized by him, Reza Negarestani and Pete Wolfendale at the Berlin House of World Cultures on the subject of “Emancipation as Navigation: From the space of reasons to the space of freedoms ”.

art

Avanessian's work in the art field is understood, among other things, as that of a post-contemporary artist who tries to combine speculative questions in philosophy and the visual arts and to make them understandable. In addition to classic publications in print, film projects and his work as a guest lecturer, he also repeatedly uses art festivals and exhibition opportunities. The “Tomorrow Today / curated by_vienna” gallery festival 2015 was based on Avanessian's essay of the same name and combined the art of 20 renowned curators with the idea of real post-capitalism.

As part of the 9th Berlin Biennale from June 4 to September 18, 2016, Avanessian led the ten-day Young Curators Workshop, which dealt with alternatives to the economic and political models of contemporary art. An analogous insufficiency in the status quo of political theory or practice, as well as the mostly postulated effects of political art, led to the idea of a democratic-transparent secret service DISCREET, which Avanessian as an artist at the Berlin Biennale in the summer of 2016 as part of the multi-week project together with Alexander Martos will establish.

Armen Avanessian writes regularly for art magazines such as Spike , Texts on Art and DIS Magazine and repeatedly addresses art in a philosophical context. For several years he has been working on a number of projects with the illustrator Andreas Töpfer for various publications in Merve Verlag, Sternberg Press and in film form.
