Patrik Berger (born November 10, 1973 in Prague ) is a former Czech football player .

Career

society

Berger first played from 1991 to 1995 at FK Slavia Prague , for which he scored 24 goals in 89 games. He was hired in 1995 as an exceptional technical talent in the midfield of Borussia Dortmund . In the 1995/1996 season, Berger played 27 games for Dortmund and was German champion under coach Ottmar Hitzfeld .

The Czech moved to England for Liverpool in the next season . After the successful European Football Championship in 1996 he developed into an outstanding midfield director. However, Berger often suffered from injuries. In 2003 he moved to Portsmouth FC and in 2005 to Aston Villa . There he was sorted out in November 2006 after allegedly refusing to play for the reserve team. On loan, Berger moved to the second division side Stoke City .

After his good performance in the second division, Berger played again for Aston Villa for the first time in spring 2007 and scored his first goal in two years in the game against Blackburn Rovers on April 7 . In the penultimate game of the season against Sheffield United , he was able to enter himself in the scorers list, but he did not manage to fight for a regular place in his three years in Birmingham.

For the 2008/09 season Berger moved to Sparta Prague . The midfielder signed a two-year contract with the Czech record champions. At the beginning of 2010, Berger ended his active career due to persistent knee problems.

National team

Patrik Berger made his first international match for the senior national team of Czechoslovakia on March 23, 1993 in qualifying for the 1994 World Cup . In the 1-1 draw in Limassol against Cyprus , he came on in the 76th minute for Jan Suchopárek .

His second international match, on June 16, 1993, he also made in qualifying for the 1994 World Cup. At the international match, in Toftir , against the Faroe Islands , they won 6-0. However, the qualification failed. It was also his last international match for Czechoslovakia, as their association disbanded due to the division between the Czech Republic and Slovakia .
