society

Peña made his professional debut in Mexico's Primera División at the age of 18 in the 1959/60 season. After eight seasons with his hometown club, he moved in 1967 to Cruz Azul , who had only recently moved to the capital , with whom he was under contract for the next three years and with whom he celebrated the greatest successes of his career at club level. Immediately after the 1970 World Cup, which was held in his own country , he returned for four years to his home club, which had since been renamed Club Jalisco . National team

"El Halcón" made his international debut on March 22, 1961 in a World Cup qualifier in San José against the selection of Costa Rica, which the Mexicans lost 1-0. Peña, who was then used in the right full-back position, completed all eight games that the Mexican national team played up to and including May 21, 1961. After that he was not used in the national team for almost two years, not even at the 1962 World Cup in Chile. In March 1963 he became a member of the national team again. With the exception of the first two games, in which he acted in the unfamiliar position of the left full-back, he was usually used as a central defender, mostly on the right side. From then on, he was not only part of the Mexican team, for which he played 69 of 92 internationals by October 3, 1971 against Bermuda (2-0), but also acted as their captain in all 67 internationals between February 1965 and October 1971 .

Peña was also a regular at the World Championships in England in 1966 and in 1970, playing all seven of the Mexicans' games. Gustavo Peña was something of a tragic hero, especially at the 1970 World Cup in his own country. First, he converted a penalty in the final group game against Belgium to the decisive 1-0 winner. In the quarter-final match against Italy just three days later, however, he underwent an own goal to equalize 1-1 for the Azzurri , which led to the hosts losing 4-1.

After 1971, Peña only played five times in the national team. He played his last international match on September 8, 1974 in Dallas against the USA national team, which the Mexicans won 1-0.
