history

In 1991 Wang Zhidong and Tan Yanchou founded the company as Suntendy Electronic Technology and Research to develop a Chinese-language shell  for Windows . This was finally brought onto the market in 1993 under the name RichWin. In the same year, the company changed its name to Beijing Stone Rich Sight Information Technology Company (SRS). RichWin enjoyed great popularity in China and was used on nearly 80% of the approximately three million personal computers in China by the mid-1990s .

After a trip to the United States in 1995, Zhidong and Yanchou wanted to bring the company closer to the Internet and in 1996 they launched a new version of RichWin, which was equipped with a web browser . This was continuously developed and so SRS quickly became the most popular web portal in China. In 1997, the site received more than a million hits a day.

In 1998, SRS merged with the start-up Sinanet , founded by students from Stanford University , to expand the company beyond China . Sinanet was an easy way for Chinese in the United States to connect with family and friends in China, and it was already popular. As a result of the merger, the company was renamed SINA Corporation and the website sina.com was launched for the first time .

In 1999 the company went public on the NASDAQ  . At the time, analysts estimated the company to be worth approximately $ 1.5 billion. In 2000, SINA entered into a cooperation with  China Telecom to increase Internet usage in the country. As a result, the number of Internet users in China increased from 4.5 million in 1999 to more than 50 million in 2002.

With the increased use of cell phones, China began to offer SMS subscriptions to more than 60 offers in 2001 . In the same year, Wang Zhidong resigned as general manager; Daniel Mao took his place  .

Today the company is managed by the Chinese Charles Chao .
