Charles Chao

Charles Chao ( Chinese  曹國偉  /  曹国伟 , Pinyin Cáo Guówěi , born November 10, 1965 in Shanghai ), also Cao Guowei or Charles Cao , is a Chinese entrepreneur and Chief Executive Officer of the Chinese Internet company Sina Corporation .

Chao graduated from Fudan University in Shanghai with a degree in journalism in 1988 . He then worked for Shanghai television for a year. He then completed a Masters Degree in Journalism from the University of Oklahoma . In 1991, he enrolled in an MBA from the University of Texas at Austin focusing on accounting. After graduating, he worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers in Silicon Valley , where, among other things, he advised companies on their IPO on NASDAQ .

In 1999, Chao started working for Sina, where he worked in various positions such as Chief Financial Officer and Joint Chief Operating Officer. After five years with the Sina Corporation, he took on responsibility for the advertising business, which was then threatened by competitor Sohu . In 2005 advertising sales were back on a growth path and exceeded that of the competition. On May 10, 2006, Chao took over the post of Chief Executive Officer from his predecessor Wang Yan .
