phpPgAdmin is a web-based front-end with which PostgreSQL databases can be administered. Analogous to phpMyAdmin for MySQL , on which it was originally based, it is a PHP application and can therefore run on a large number of systems. The decisive advantage over the command line-oriented PostgreSQL tool is the graphic surface and the accessibility with a web browser over a network , thus also over the Internet . Due to the visualization , it offers a good introduction for newbies and makes work easier for advanced users and experts.

There is also a module for exporting the data, which can handle the SQL , XML , XHTML and CSV languages as well as pure text output.

The fact that phpPgAdmin is written in PHP also simplifies installation , as only the directory with the script files and images has to be extracted into a directory that is accessible to the web server .

The initiators and main authors of the project are Dan Wilson, Robert Treat and Christopher Kings-Lynne.

The user interface of phpPgAdmin has so far been translated into 27 languages.
