Meron Mendel (born 1976 in Ramat Gan ) is an Israeli educator and director of the Anne Frank educational institution .

Life

After a youth in the kibbutz Maschʾabbe Sade and military service in the IDF , Mendel studied in Haifa , where he graduated in 2000 with a bachelor's degree in history and education and in 2002 with a master's degree in Jewish history . He was involved in numerous peace projects and is still active in Givat Haviva's circle of friends to this day . In 2001 he continued his studies in Germany at the University of Munich and received his doctorate in 2010 in Frankfurt am Main with an educational thesis on the subject of the living environment of Jewish young people in Germany. He worked at the educational science institute at the University of Frankfurt and at the Jewish Museum .

Since 2010 he has been director of the Anne Frank educational institution . During this time, he expanded the facility's offerings with a multimedia learning laboratory for young people, two counseling centers for those affected by discrimination, as well as nationally recognized exhibitions (most recently “Holocaust in Comics”) and conferences.

Mendel repeatedly positions himself controversially in public; Among other things, he was involved in protests against right-wing publishers at the Frankfurt Book Fair 2017. Particularly when it comes to the issue of anti-Semitism among young people, such as the Kollegah debate , his demands for improved educational work continue to attract attention.

Mendel described the decision by the City of Frankfurt's Magistrate not to provide the BDS movement with any urban space as a “strong signal against hatred of Jews and Israel-related anti-Semitism ”.

Mendel is, among other things, the founder of the Frankfurt Anne Frank Day .
