The Anne Frank Center in Haus Schwarzenberg , next to the Hackesche Höfe in Berlin, is the German partner organization of the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam. By dealing with the life of Anne Frank , it promotes the memory of the crimes of National Socialism and the message of her diary .

history

The foundation goes back to an initiative from 1994 when the traveling exhibition “The world of Anne Frank. 1929–1945 ”was prepared in Berlin. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the liberation from the Nazi regime, it was shown in a total of six city districts. On the basis of the association that was created specifically for the coordination of the exhibition, the commitment to the topics addressed should be continued. After the conclusion of a cooperation agreement with the Anne Frank House in Amsterdam , the Anne Frank Center in Berlin-Mitte was opened on June 12, 1998 .

The Anne Frank Center has been a member of the Transparent Civil Society Initiative since December 2013 . The center has been funded by the SKala initiative since 2016 .

Patrick Siegele has been director of the Anne Frank Center since 2014 .

activities

Permanent exhibition in Berlin

The Anne Frank Center commemorates Anne Frank with the permanent exhibition “Everything about Anne”. The preoccupation with Anne Frank's life and her diary gives visitors access to the history of the Holocaust and encourages them to deal with anti-Semitism in the past and present. For example, anti-Semitic falsification allegations that Otto Frank, Anne's father, was confronted with in relation to the diary are linked to current examples of anti-Semitic incidents. The exhibition is an interactive learning space and contains numerous preserved photos and documents. It is particularly aimed at children, young people and families. School classes and groups can book educational exhibition guides on request. “Everything about Anne” is largely inclusive and has monitors with translations into sign language and a guidance system for the blind. A comprehensive glossary and exhibition texts in clear language make it easier for people with learning difficulties, among others, to understand. A model of the Secret Annex, a portrait of Anne Frank and a copy of the diary can be felt.

Traveling exhibitions

In addition to the permanent exhibition, the Anne Frank Center offers several traveling exhibitions, mostly lasting four weeks, some of which are specifically aimed at young people. The five different exhibitions have already been shown in many municipalities in Germany.

Anne Frank Day

Anne Frank Day is a nationwide school day of action against anti-Semitism and racism and for democracy . Materials are made available to participating schools free of charge. Every year tens of thousands of students and teachers are involved in the day of action.

Anne Frank Day always takes place on June 12th, Anne Frank's birthday. The center organizes Anne Frank Day in cooperation with partners, including the Anne Frank Education Center , the Bergen-Belsen Memorial , School without Racism - School with Courage , the Anne Frank House and the Anne Frank Fund .

On the nationwide Anne Frank Day 2020, 340 schools are campaigning against anti-Semitism and remembering the Holocaust. The day of action 75 years after the end of the war has the motto "Freedom".

further activities

The facility offers nationwide training courses on intercultural competence for educators and on the subject of anti-Semitism for teachers . The center makes an important contribution to the education of children and young people with intercultural learning materials.

Since 2011, the Anne Frank Center has been sponsoring the “War Children” project and the follow-up project “70 Years After. Generation im Dialog “the intergenerational dialogue. The focus is on the childhood and youth experiences of the generation born before 1941. Young people and senior citizens in different cities come here to talk to each other.

The Anne Frank Center Berlin is one of numerous institutions worldwide where Austrians can do a twelve-month memorial service instead of military or community service in Germany .
