Spearhead class
The Spearhead- class ships are part of a type of ship that Austal has developed for the US Navy called the Joint High Speed Vessel , or JHSV for short .
In September 2015, the US Navy decided to designate JHSV ships as Expeditionary Fast Transport (EPF) in the future .
history
The US Department of Defense announced a development and construction contract for a new generation of versatile supply ships , which Austal won. In the 1.6 billion US dollar project, Austal is developing and building the class ship , with the option of nine more units by 2023.
The JHSV ships should be suitable for combined use for troop movement, equipment transport, humanitarian aid measures, and for operations in shallow waters. This means that the ship type can be used by both the US Army and the US Navy. The JHSV ships are therefore a strategic addition to the LCS ships.
The 103 m long JHSV is based on the civil high-speed ferry catamarans from Austal.
Furnishing
Due to the structural proximity to the civil express ferries , the LHSV offers various advantageous features. A flight deck and a parking bay for marine helicopters are available on the upper deck . Underneath is an open, level cargo area with a total capacity of 1,863 m³. At 26.2 m, the width of the hold is only 2.3 m less than the width of the ship. At the rear there is a vehicle ramp designed for M1A2 Abrams tanks.
