Utsira is an island in the North Sea 18 km west of Karmøy and the smallest municipality in Norway . The island is the namesake for the sea area of the same name .
history
The municipality of Utsira is part of Haugaland . Finds from the Stone Age have been made on the island . The church of Utsira dates from 1785.
Infrastructure
traffic
The island is regularly approached by a liner from Haugesund .
Power supply
Utsira is supplied with electrical energy by a submarine cable from the mainland.
From August 2004 to 2007 a test project was carried out in which 10 households on the island were fed exclusively by wind energy as primary energy . The test system consisted of two Enercon -E-40 systems with 600 kW each, with one wind turbine being throttled to a maximum of 160 kW in order to avoid excessive fluctuations between generation and consumption. The remaining fluctuations were partially compensated for by a flywheel storage system with a storage capacity of 5 kWh. Excess energy was temporarily stored in the form of hydrogen in a pressure storage device with a maximum capacity of three days. This was converted back into electricity via a 10 kW fuel cell and a hydrogen engine with generator (55 kW) when there was a calm or a storm, i.e. when the wind turbines were not delivering sufficient energy . A fossil fuel-powered diesel generator was used to protect against power failure should the storage systems not be able to compensate for the fluctuating primary energy.
Others
For ornithologists , the island is by resting here migratory birds known.
The Hamburg Maritime Weather Service specifies the weather for the Utsira sea area in its reports.
