The Norwegian series NSB Type 74 Type 76 based on the Stadler flirtation (proper spelling FLIRTs for " f left l judges i NNOVATIVE R egional- T riebzug"). He is one of the Swiss railway manufacturer Stadler Rail constructed for regional and S-Bahn electric low-floor - multiple unit . Since the third generation, the Flirt has also been offered with diesel-electric and bimodal drive . Meanwhile, the use takes place not only in the regional transport and the manufacturer declares FLIRT with " f left l judges I ntercity- and R egional- T riebzug".

The 1000th train was delivered to the customer in September 2016, at which time a total of 1339 units had been sold in 15 countries. Norges Statsbaner and later Norske tog have ordered a total of 150 electric trains. The 100th train was delivered in July 2018.

Basic technical description

The trainsets were from the beginning with electric drive available and since 2012 with a diesel-electric drive and since 2017 in a hybrid version supplied includes both systems. They consist of two to eight cars and have been marketed in two variants since 2016: "FLIRT160" as a local and regional train variant with a maximum speed of 160 km / h and "FLIRT200", an intercity and long-distance train variant with a maximum speed of 200 km / h . The trains can be adapted to different needs independently.

Some of the trains have Jakobs bogies between the cars and, in some configurations, can accelerate up to 1.2 m / s².

The Bo'2'2'Bo '+ 2'2'Bo' wheel arrangement can be explained by the fact that the motorized intermediate car sits on one side on a Jakobs bogie and on the other side there is a normal motorized bogie. The car can be coupled normally with the second part of the train, with the following intermediate car also having a normal bogie.

Large parts of the wagons are low-floor and thus meet the general requirements for accessibility. Due to the low-floor solution, most of the technical equipment is on the roof, making it easier to access for maintenance work. The trains consume less energy per seat-kilometer than their predecessors.

The Norwegian State Railways decided on August 18, 2008 to order 50 new FLIRT multiple units from Stadler Rail for a total of NOK 4 billion . This is NSB's largest investment in multiple units of all time. Of the first 50, 24 trains were ordered for regional trains and 26 for local trains, with the general option of an additional 100 trains.

In winter 2009 a Swiss FLIRT unit was tested in Norway. It was the RABe 521 011-7 "Oberdorf / Weissenstein", a four-car set based in the Basel region.

The delivery date for a large part of the train sets was set for 2012, as the expansion of the double tracks at Vestfoldbanen and Askerbanen was planned for this year. In November 2012 NSB ordered a further 16 Type 75 units for NOK 1.3 billion. The last of them was delivered on May 1, 2015. In the state budget for 2016, NSB provided additional funds for the purchase of 26 new multiple units, and orders were further increased. The 100th unit was delivered in summer 2018 and an additional 50 were ordered. The trains partially replace older local trains ( NSB Type 69 ) on the routes Skøyen - Mysen , Stabekk - Moss , Drammen - Dal and the Oslo S - Rakkestad rush hour .

Unlike older Norwegian trains, FLIRT trains are based on standard components. However, the multiple units delivered for Norway have several modifications. The design of the front has been significantly changed to better protect the driver from collisions with moose and loose objects on the route. Since Norway has a wider clearance profile than the rest of Europe, the trains are a few decimeters wider than the usual FLIRT, which among other things enables 3 + 2 seating in the coaches. The trains are also equipped with a heating system for the brakes. The fact that all critical components are built into the train or mounted on the roof is an advantage for winter use.

The main workshop for the maintenance of the FLIRT units is in Sundland in Drammen , minor repairs are carried out in Nylende in Skien .

NSB and Vy have also ordered several units for Gjøvikbanen , Vossebanen and Trønderbanen . The trains for Trønderbanen are supplied as two-motor multiple units for electric and diesel operation.

Noise pollution

When ordering, NSB set the world's strictest requirements in terms of noise pollution. The train was classified as a quiet train . The Norwegian Association for Noise ( Støyforeningen ) has praised the trains as being quiet. On Støyfri Day ( Noise-Free Day) 2015, NSB were awarded the association's honorary award for their commitment to these trains.

The use of signal horns is very annoying for residents on the routes. The EU directive requires a volume of 120 dBA for the horns directly in front of the train. This corresponds to the ear pain threshold. The signal horns are used in front of unsecured level crossings along the railway lines. Work is ongoing to remove these level crossings. Unsecured level crossings are avoided on new routes.

The original plan was to take older multiple units out of service as soon as the new trains went into service. However, this depends on the current volume of traffic, so that the older vehicles will be needed even longer.

Type 74

The type 74 multiple units are the regional train variant and were delivered first. These were initially used in InterCity traffic in Eastern Norway . They serve the regional train lines R11 Skien – Eidsvoll and R10 Drammen – Lillehammer and replace the type 70 trains . The Type 74 has 14% more seats than the Type 70 and requires 20% less power, although it is 8% heavier.

The first type 74 multiple unit was completed on September 8, 2010 and was shown for the first time during InnoTrans at the end of the month in Berlin. The test drives began in 2011.

Accident in Holmestrand

A serious accident during the test drive in Vestfold on February 15, 2012 led to a slight delay in the test drives. The train 74-05 hit a rock face at a speed of 135 km / h on a route with a maximum permissible speed of 70 km / h. After it was determined that the excessive speed was the cause of the accident, NSB were able to test the trains further. The 74-05 train was so damaged that it could not be repaired. The multiple unit was not officially taken over by the NSB, but used as a spare parts donor.

The first train entered service on May 2, 2012. In August 2016, multiple units 74-37 (unit 36) were put into service. Another four vehicles, which are produced in Poland, were ordered in 2017 and should be delivered in 2020. Another 13 units were ordered in 2018.

The NSB were criticized for the narrow seats on the train, although they are ½ cm wider than the NSB Type 72 . It was therefore decided to replace the 3 + 2 seating with wider seats with a 2 + 2 seating.

Type 75

Type 75 No. 12 in Stabekk

The type 75 multiple units are the local train variant that is used continuously on longer routes with 3 + 2 seating: L12 Kongsberg – Eidsvoll, L13 Drammen – Dal, L14 Asker – Kongsvinger, L21 Stabekk – Moss and L22 Skøyen – Mysen. The first multiple unit started operating on December 2, 2012. On November 22, 2019, the 77th unit in Eastern Norway was handed over to operations. Of the units ordered in August 2017, 75-78 to 75-83 are still open for delivery.

Type 75-2

Type 75-2 No. 56 for the Gjøvikbane

20 units for Gjøvikbanen and Vossebanen have a slightly different seating arrangement (3 + 2 seating) and are referred to as Type 75-2 . They have road numbers 75-52 to 75-71 and were accepted between September 7, 2017 and February 8, 2019. In order to be able to operate the trains on Gjøvikbane, a new converter was installed in Gjøvik , as the output of the previously used one in Lunner was not sufficient for operation. With the new converter, the entire route can also be disconnected from the rest of the network if necessary.

The EVN number for these trains is 0402.

Type 76

Type 76 is the local train variant for Trøndelag , which can run on sections with and without overhead lines. The trains are multi-system vehicles and have an additional car with a diesel engine and a generator that generates electricity for propulsion when required. A total of 14 units were ordered from Stadler in December 2018. These are intended for Trønderbanen, Meråkerbanen and Rørosbanen and replace all type 92 diesel multiple units . The first two trains are to be delivered in 2021.
