Karsdorf opencast mine

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Karsdorf open-cast mine is located on the edge of the municipality of Karsdorf in Saxony-Anhalt. Commissioned in 1928, the mining volume increased to over 4 million tons per year in the 1970s. Currently (as of 2019) around 2.5 million tons of shell limestone are mined there annually and then processed in the nearby cement works of Opterra GmbH, a subsidiary of the Irish Cement Roadstone Holding .

The promotion takes place on two excavation plates. The upper excavation level is approx. 30 meters high and 900 meters wide. The lower excavation level measures approx. 25 meters in height and 700 meters in width. With a daily quarrying amount of 9,000 to 10,000 tons, the mining progress is around 25 meters per year. The conveyor belt must therefore be advanced every two years.

Mining operations

In the first step, the shell limestone is loosened using the large-bore blasting method. Then large electric cable excavators of the Uralmasch EKG-5A type pick up the material and feed it into the crushers . The roughly 450-tonne crusher, which is also equipped with an electric drive, crushes the shell limestone with an output of 1088 hp and passes it on to the transfer belt trailer. From there, the material is transported to the 1.2 meter wide conveyor belt and transported directly to the cement plant.
