Rakkestad is a Norwegian municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Viken . It consists of the districts Degernes, Os and Rakkestad. Degernes and Rakkestad were merged into today's municipality in 1964.

history

At Høgnipen in Degernes, a former fishing settlement, some of the oldest stone-age finds in Norway have been made, including stone tools that are 11,000 years old. There are also 3000 year old rock carvings. The name Rakkestad is supposed to be derived from the name of a farm and its owner Rakki .

1,424 residents chased the Vogt Hermann Molteke (from a German family) from his Lehn in Rakkestad. This did not happen because he was of German descent, but because of his legal violations, as a received letter to King Erik shows: He arrested Hermann Krus at home, brought him out of the district in handcuffs and confiscated his property. He also imprisoned his pregnant wife from spring to autumn until the day she was supposed to give birth. He also had another resident arrested and his wife was beaten so that she never recovered completely, took his money and took it out of the district. He stole eight yards of cloth from another woman. He illegally took a box from another resident without a judgment. He also attacked the pastor armed. That's why they chased him away and they threatened to leave the district if he came back again.
