Aremark is a Norwegian municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Viken on the Norwegian-Swedish border. The municipality has 1,325 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020).
geography
Aremark is bordered by Sweden to the east , Marker to the north , Rakkestad to the west and Halden to the south. About 80% of the area is covered by forest. The highest elevation is the Høgestang with 274.6 moh.
Most of the population lives along the Haldenvassdraget river system and in the north of the municipality. About half of the municipality's residents live in the vicinity of the administrative center of Fosby , east of Lake Aremarksjø .
The inhabitants of the municipality are called aremarking . As in many municipalities in Viken , the official written language is Bokmål , i.e. the more widespread of the two Norwegian language forms.
history
Aremark Municipality was founded in 1837 when the division into municipalities was introduced in Norway. The marker was spun off in 1903, and the borders have not changed since then. Because of the decreasing importance of agriculture, the population fell from 1950 to 1970 from 1724 to 1353. In the period from 1970 to 2017, however, the population was relatively stable. Until December 31, 2019, Aremark belonged to the former province of Østfold , but due to the regional reform in Norway , this was transferred to the newly created province of Viken.
Søndre Fange's stone box is located at the Middle Farm at the Fang farm in Aremark .
economy
The most important economic sectors in the municipality are agriculture and forestry . Industrial companies are hardly represented in the municipality with only four percent of jobs in 2015. Strømfoss Kraftverk is located in the municipality and uses a 2.5 meter high gradient in Haldenvassdraget to generate electricity.
In 2019, of 640 people, only 219 worked in Aremark itself, 254 in the neighboring municipality of Halden and the others in Sarpsborg , Marker and other municipalities, among others .
coat of arms
The Aremark coat of arms, official since 1986, shows two blue elks on a silver background. This is to show that the forest, with its high population of elk, plays a major role for the community.
