Vestby is a Norwegian municipality in Fylke Viken with 18,042 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative seat is in the town of the same name.

Geography

Vestby is about 100  moh. up to 300  moh. At the Oslo Fjord the coast falls steeply. The western line of the Østfoldbanen and the European route 6 (E6) run through Vestby . The 903 meter long Follotunnel of the E6 is in the municipality.

  • Hvitsten, population 311 (2012): Home of the Olsen shipping family and a popular seaside resort. As early as the 17th century, wood was being exported from the local harbor, and the Olsen brothers revived the industry from the middle of the 19th century. The village had town status from 1837 to 1964 and was the smallest town in Norway with 76 inhabitants (1951). In 1911 Edvard Munch had acquired the Ramme property , a little north of the village, where he spent some time. Since 2006, Petter Olsen's cultural and ecological project Ramme Gaard has been attracting additional tourists. The name Hvitsten means "white stone".

Vestby Municipality was established in 1964. Until December 31, 2019, Vestby belonged to the former Akershus Province , which became part of the newly created Viken Province as part of the regional reform in Norway . The place Hvitsten was at the end of the 18th century a place often visited by artists. The birthplace of the writer Johan Herman Wessel has been preserved to this day and the former rectory has been converted into a cultural center.

The coat of arms, which has been official since 1992, shows three yellow trefoil crosses on a red background. It is supposed to symbolize the three historical parishes ( Kirkesogn ) of the municipality. However, since 1998 there have been four of these parishes.
