Name and story

The name Skiptvet is a combination of two words. The first part can come from the norrone Skagi , which can be translated as "something that towers into the landscape". Another interpretation, namely Skeggi means "man with a beard". The second part of the name is a common Norwegian place name from the Viking Age and means "a little piece of ground". The local population pronounces the place name Sketve ; a resident is accordingly referred to as a skjetving .

It is believed that the first people settled in the commune around 8000 years ago, particularly along the Glomma River , where the best living conditions were found.

Historically, industry did not play a significant role in Skiptvet. However, a village developed around the local dairy. Meieribyen (roughly: "Meiereistadt") is the center of the municipality today.
