Nordre Follo is a Norwegian municipality in the province ( Fylke ) Viken , which has existed since January 1, 2020. It consists of the former municipalities Oppegård and Ski and has 59,288 inhabitants (as of February 27, 2020). The administrative seat is the town of Ski in the former municipality of the same name.

geography

The municipality borders Oslo in the north, the Bunnefjord and Ås in the west, Hobøl in the southeast and Enebakk in the southeast. Nordre Follo is located in the area of ​​the countryside and the former province of Akershus . The municipal area is hilly and outside of the built-up areas mostly wooded. There are agricultural areas in the south of the municipality. The highest point is the Tømmerås with 313.1  moh. Lake Gjersjøen is located in the north of the municipality, formerly Oppegård . So-called Tettsteder , i.e. settlements that are counted as one area for statistical purposes, are Ski, Siggerud , Kråkstad , Skotbu and Sandvoll . Parts of the former municipality of Oppegård belong to the Tettsted Oslo.

Nordre Follo is one of the largest municipalities in Norway in terms of population. Most of the residents live in the urban area along the railway line south of Oslo. East of Gjersjøen, the Østfoldbanen runs through Kolbotn and Langhus to Ski. South of the lake the two European roads E 6 and E 18 meet.

history

The municipality was created in the course of local government reform in Norway on January 1, 2020 by merging Ski and Oppegård. The municipality of Ski was created in 1930 by the department of the municipality of Kråkstad . In 1964 Ski and Kråkstad were reunited, but the name changed to Ski. Oppegård was founded in 1915 when Nesodden was split into two municipalities. The first local election for the new municipality of Nordre Follo took place on September 9, 2019.

In the municipality there is the Stone Age settlement of Stunner , which is the oldest evidence of human life in the Viken province. There are also stone churches from the 12th century in the municipality. In 1848 the first meteorite in Norway was found in Ski .

economy

The industry is mainly concentrated in the towns of Ski and Langhus. It is shaped by the graphic industry. There is also a chemical industry in the municipality and products made of rubber and plastic are manufactured. In Mastemyr factories are available from companies such as IBM , Kodak , Robert Bosch GmbH and Volvo . Agriculture is mainly to be found in the south and center of the municipality.
