Thorvald Torgersen
Thorvald Hagbart Torgersen (born July 9, 1862 in Ski , † July 10, 1943 in Tjøme ) was a Norwegian painter.
He began studying painting with Knud Bergslien from 1880 to 1882. Together with Jørgen Sørensen , Edvard Munch , Halfdan Strøm and Harald Bertrand they set up a joint studio, where they were advised by Christian Krohg from 1883 to 1884 . In 1883 Torgersen attended Frits Thaulow's open-air painting academy in Modum .
He visited Paris in the spring of 1885 and again in 1889. There he was influenced by Jules Bastien-Lepage . He studied with Kristian Zahrtmann in Copenhagen from February to April 1892 .
He made his debut at the autumn exhibition in 1883. The pictures exhibited at the world exhibitions in Paris in 1889 and Paris in 1900 brought him honorable awards. There are four of his portrait paintings by painters: one by Gustav Wentzel from 1881 and three by Edvard Munch from 1881, 1882 and 1886.
Torgersen lived on the small island of Tjøme from 1917. In later years he mostly painted children with various games in the sunshine on the beach.
