Tjøme is an island (12 km long, 24.5 km²) in the municipality of Færder in the Norwegian province of Vestfold og Telemark .

The island's name probably originates from norrønen tjúma that of taumr can be derived ( "Rope, Tau"). The name may be related to the elongated shape of the island.

By January 1, 2018, it formed an independent municipality with the islands of Brøtsø (or Brøtsøy ) (1.9 km²) and Hvasser (3.6 km²) in the southeast, until it was merged with the neighboring municipality of Nøtterøy .

Furthermore, 475 smaller or larger islands or Holme belonged to the municipality without year-round habitation, for example the islands of Sandø (or Sandøy ) (1.1 km²) and the holiday colony Hudø (or Hui ). In the far south are the Tristein Islands ( Tristein-øyene ) with the lighthouse Færder fyr , which is the southern end point of the Oslofjord. The southern tip of the island of Tjøme, a popular destination, is called Verdens Ende (" The End of the World ").
