The Slottsfjelltunnel ( Norwegian Slottsfjelltunnelen ) is a 235 meter long former railway tunnel , which now runs as a road tunnel through the Slottsfjell in Tønsberg in the province of Vestfold og Telemark in Norway .

history

In 1881 the tunnel was built as part of the Grevskapsbane . The old train station in Tønsberg was the terminus of a branch line from Larvik , which branched off from the line to Drammen at the junction at Jarlsberg points . In 1915 the station was moved from Tønsberg to Knapløkka further east into the city. The line to the old station became a siding of the Tønsberg – Eidsfoss railway line and lost its importance.

The tunnel has been part of the former Riksvei and today's Fylkesvei 308 since the 1970s. This created a connection between Tønsberg's oldest district, Nordbyen, along the Tønsberg Fjord and the Storgata, on which the Tønsberg domkirke is located.

On June 28, 2012 the tunnel was closed and used as the venue for a concert by Grex Vocalis in connection with the premiere of the piece Aradia by Tønsberg composer Martin Romberg .
