Hans Wanner (born March 25, 1905 in Schaffhausen ; † July 7, 1996 in Hedingen ) was a Swiss linguist and lexicographer and fourth editor-in-chief of the Swiss Idiotikon .

Life and work

Wanner, a citizen of Schleitheim and the son of a canton school teacher, attended primary and canton schools in Schaffhausen and then studied German , English and antiquity in Zurich and London from 1924 to 1930 . In 1930 he received his doctorate under Albert Bachmann with a thesis on the acceptance of the communal German written language in Schaffhausen (printed in 1931). In the following years Wanner worked as a teacher for German and English at the commercial school of the commercial association and at the Athensäum private school in Zurich.

In 1942 Wanner was hired as an editor at the Schweizerischer Idiotikon , initially only on the basis of a work agreement because of the difficult times. In 1951 he was appointed editor-in-chief as the successor to Otto Gröger . In 1961 he initiated the normal alphabet volume registers, which since then have concluded every dictionary volume; that for the previously published volumes were completed in 1990. After his retirement in 1974, Peter Dalcher became his successor in the editor-in-chief , and Ruth Jörg took over the vacancy in the editorial office. Subsequently, Wanner devoted himself to the elaboration of the grammatical index of the idiot (up to volume XIII), which was continued for volume XIV by Kurt Meyer and can now be used online via the institute's homepage.

In addition, Wanner gave introductory courses in the use of the dictionary at the University of Zurich and worked as a philological assistant in the publication of the works of Huldrych Zwingli and Heinrich Bullinger . In 1943 he was a co-founder of the Zürcher Sprachverein and its first chairman. From 1952 to 1958 he was chairman of the German-speaking Swiss Language Association (today: Swiss Association for the German Language ), for which he was able to attract young people. From 1958 to 1962 he finally presided over the school administration of his place of residence Hedingen.
