The St. Ansgar-Werke in Germany and the Ansgar-Werk in Switzerland are aid organizations of the Roman Catholic Church for the Scandinavian diaspora .

history

The first Ansgar plant was set up in Bavaria in 1925 on the initiative of the Vicar Apostolic for Sweden, Johann Evangelist Müller . In 1926, this facility was expanded to Germany at the instigation of Pastor Peter Louis. Archbishop Josef Frings approved an Ansgarwerk for the Archdiocese of Cologne in 1955 . In 1962, an Ansgar plant was launched in Switzerland . In 1967 it was founded in the Diocese of Osnabrück and the Diocese of Münster .

The intention to integrate the St. Ansgarius-Werk into the Bonifatiuswerk failed due to various resistances.

Goal setting

The main tasks of the works are material and ideal aid for the Catholic Church in the Nordic countries, including Denmark , Sweden , Norway , Finland and Iceland . Initially, the works were dependent on private donors and benefactors . The religious orders in the Scandinavian countries set the local priorities. In the later years the German dioceses took over the financial obligations and led the local relief efforts in Scandinavia.

St. Ansgarius factory in Cologne

The establishment of the Ansgarius factory in Cologne can be traced back to the private initiative of the priest Peter Louis (born February 2, 1886 in Godesberg-Rüngsdorf; † October 16, 1956). He had been co-editor of the yearbook since 1934 and made a major contribution to the Nordic diaspora. In 1955 the Archdiocese of Cologne took over the management of the aid organization. The Ansgarwerk in Cologne, together with the Munich-based company, is responsible for the publication of the yearbook. The Cologne prelate Günter Assenmacher is chairman of the St. Ansgarius factory in Cologne and editor of the yearbook .

Ansgar factory in Switzerland

The Ansgar plant in Switzerland was founded in 1962 by the then Apostolic Delegate for Scandinavia, Bruno Bernhard Heim . In its beginnings, the Ansgar factory in Switzerland was a rather informal group of patrons. In 1980 an association was founded that has given the plant the institutional framework ever since.

St. Ansgar factory in Osnabrück-Hamburg

Bishop Helmut Hermann Wittler von Osnabrück founded an Ansgarwerk in the Diocese of Osnabrück in 1967. In 1995 the newly established Archdiocese of Hamburg joined the Ansgarwerk in Osnabrück. The proximity to the Scandinavian countries obliges Osnabrück and Hamburg in a special way. Numerous sponsorships between the parishes support the theological training of clergy , religious and lay people as well as candidates for priesthood in their training. Construction projects are not funded. The chairman is the Osnabrück Cathedral Chapter Msgr. Ansgar Lüttel.

Ansgarwerk Münster

As Bishop of Münster, Joseph Höffner founded a diocesan Ansgarwerk in the diocese of Münster on January 10, 1967. The Ansgar plant provides grants for the living of priests and promotes the building of churches and educational institutions. It also promotes theological formation of lay people, religious and priests. The Ansgar-Info magazine publishes it twice a year .
