Norbert Trippen
Norbert Trippen (born June 19, 1936 in Düsseldorf ; † April 19, 2017 ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman , church historian and university professor , who was also known as the biographer of Cardinal Josef Frings and Cardinal Joseph Höffner .
Life
Norbert Trippen studied Catholic theology at the University of Innsbruck , at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and at the University of Cologne ; he became an active member of the Catholic student associations K.St.V. Rhenania Innsbruck and K.St.V. Arminia Bonn in KV . On July 12, 1962, he was ordained a priest by Cardinal Frings. After a first pastoral activity as chaplain to St. Nikolaus von Tolentino in Rösrath , he became assistant to the vicar general and at the same time subsidiar at the Church of Our Lady in Cologne-Mülheim from 1966 ; between 1971 and 1973 he was also involved as a consultant for priestly training. From 1968 to 1971 and from 1973 to 1976 he was on leave for his studies, his doctorate and the subsequent habilitation . In August 1976 he was appointed by Joseph Cardinal Höffner to the reign of the archbishop's seminary in Cologne, which he headed until August 1989.
In 1972 Trippen received his doctorate with a dissertation on the cathedral chapter and the archbishopric elections in Cologne from 1821 to 1929 at the Catholic theological faculty of Bonn University. He completed his habilitation there in 1975 with a paper on theology and teaching post in conflict: The church measures against modernism in 1907 and its effects in Germany and then taught in Bonn as a private lecturer; In 1978 he was appointed adjunct professor at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn, where he taught until 2011 as a professor for medieval and modern church history.
Pope John Paul II awarded him the title of Chaplain to His Holiness in 1981 . From 1986 to 2011, Trippen was a resident cathedral chapter member of the Cologne cathedral chapter ; since 2005 he was also a penitentiary . On October 7, 1992, he was appointed Papal Honorary Prelate by Pope John Paul II . After the death of Cardinal Joseph Höffner in 1987, Norbert Trippen is said to have been the majority candidate of the Cologne Cathedral Chapter for the office of Archbishop of Cologne, according to information from church circles; However, Pope John Paul II appointed Joachim Cardinal Meisner .
From September 1991 until his release on October 31, 2011, Trippen was director of the main school / college department in the Archbishop's General Vicariate . Between 1986 and 2001 he was also president of the Borromeo Association .
In 2003/2005 Trippen presented an extensive two-volume work on the life and work of the Archbishop of Cologne, Josef Cardinal Frings. In April 2009 the first volume of a similarly interpreted biographical study on Frings' successor, Joseph Cardinal Höffner, was published.
From 2002 to 2011 Trippen was also the first point of contact for victims of sexual abuse in Roman Catholic institutions of the Archdiocese of Cologne. He resigned from this position on his 75th birthday in June 2011. Trippen was a member of the Commission for Contemporary History .
Trippen died in April 2017 at the age of 80 after a long period of suffering in a hospice of the Archdiocese of Cologne. He was buried on April 25, 2017 in the canon cemetery in front of the east choir of the High Cathedral in Cologne.
