Hermann-Josef Scheidgen (born January 12, 1957 in Troisdorf ) is a German theologian and historian .

Life

After graduating from the Maximilian-Kolbe-Gymnasium in Cologne in 1976 , he studied Catholic theology , philosophy, history and education at the Universities of Bonn and Cologne until 1982 . On November 11, 1976, he was awarded first prize at the federal level by Federal President Walter Scheel in the Federal President's history competition sponsored by the Körber Foundationexcellent. During his student days, he was involved as a student representative in numerous committees (including AStA, student parliament, senate) and advocated the reform of teacher training courses in particular. From 1984 to 1989 Scheidgen was a research assistant at the chair of the church historian Gabriel Adriányi at the University of Bonn. Scheidgen is a founding member of the Society for Intercultural Philosophy eV, of which he was vice president and managing director from 1991 to 1995 and from 2004 to 2013. Since 2008 he has been editor of the series Studies on Intercultural Philosophy, publishers Rodopi, Amsterdam and New York and Traugott Bautz, Nordhausen, together with Henk Oosterling. From 2003 to 2013 he moderated the monthly matinee “Philosophy in Libresso” in the Cologne cultural café of the same name.

In his habilitation thesis , which he accepted at the University of Bonn in the 2001/2002 winter semester , he researched the religious and social goals of German Catholics and political Catholicism in Germany during the revolution of 1848/1849 . Since 2002 he has been a private lecturer at the Catholic Theological Faculty of the University of Bonn with the venia legendi for Middle and Modern Church History . From 2007 to 2013 he is also a lecturer for church history at the seminar for Catholic theology at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal and from 2008 to 2015 lecturer for history and its didactics at the University of Cologne. Since 2012 he has been visiting professor in the history department at Lorand Eötvös University, Budapest. In 2017 the Philosophical Faculty of the Loránd Eötvös University in Budapest appointed him honorary professor.
