Gimsøy is a Norwegian island in the municipality of Vågan in Fylke Nordland in Lofoten . The island is wedged between the two main islands of the Lofot chain Austvågøya and Vestvågøy in the east and west. The E 10 crosses the two Sunde Gimsøystraumen and Sundklakkstraumen in the south of the island.
geography
Gimsøy falls outside the scenic framework of the otherwise mountainous and rugged Lofoten. Only in the southeast is a mountain range up to 760 m high, which is easy to climb and offers a good view. The remaining two thirds of the landscape are covered with peat bogs . In the past, this arctic tundra landscape was the only fuel in Lofoten. The peat extraction was carried out on a large scale.
With the recent elimination of this branch of work, the population also fell sharply and it was distributed among the neighboring communities. The whole island has been under nature protection for 20 years, so an airfield project that was being considered was also dropped. The location would have been pretty ideal between the main islands. The Norwegian oil boom is also increasingly opening up the north with increasingly scarce southern resources.
In addition to the E 10, a municipal road leads around the island, which offers a very nice view of the island world.
The island has a kindergarten, elementary school, grocery store, and an agriculture and fishing cooperative.
