St. Ottilien

St. Ottilien is a pilgrimage chapel built in 1669 in the municipality of Buttisholz in the canton of Lucerne . With its original cross-shaped floor plan, the building is one of the most extraordinary baroque church buildings in Switzerland. The chapel is located on a hill near the hamlet of St. Ottilien , southeast of the village of Buttisholz.

history

The origins of the pilgrimage site of St. Ottilia are in the dark. During archaeological excavations, the foundations of a chapel from the Middle Ages were found . The Lucerne bailiff Lüpold Feer left the band in 1572 to renew and founded a fraternity to their maintenance. His great-grandson Hans Thüring Feer had a new building built by Jost Melchior Zur Gilgen in 1669 .

building

The small baroque building (16 × 16 × 16 meters) has an unusual floor plan: It is an octagonal central building with four polygonally closed cross arms. The sweeping, curved copper roofs merge into an elegant bell tower that reaches a total height of 24 meters. Access to the interior is via a round arched vestibule in one of the cross arms. The sacristy is located above the vestibule and can be reached by a two-sided staircase in the interior. The other three arms of the cross form altar rooms.

Furnishing

The interior was provided with stucco work by Joseph Meusburger in the Rococo style in 1746 . A colored ceiling cartridge in the crown of the vault shows the pilgrimage chapel illuminated by God's ray of grace . The Way of the Cross in oval wall cartouches probably dates back to the same time .

The high altar from the construction period fills the entire chancel and is closed off by an archivolt supported by three columns . The central statue of St. Ottilia is flanked by statues of St. Jost and St. Catherine , above which is a Madonna and Child . The antependium , painted in oil, shows the removal of relics from St. Ottilia by Charles IV. It dates from 1803. Two magnificent obelisks on the high altar contain votive offerings .

In the lateral cross arms there are two classicistic retables . In the left side altar there are pictures of Saints Joseph and Beat from the 19th century, the right side altar contains a pre-baroque image of the grace of St. Ottilien . The side walls of the cross arms are decorated with votive pictures .
